Esther Kimani, a computer programmer from Kenya, has won the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering’s Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation with her early crop pest and disease detection device. The device uses solar energy, computer vision algorithms, and machine learning to swiftly detect and identify agricultural pests and diseases, reducing crop losses and boosting yields for smallholder farmers.
