The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) warns of the dangers of unseen algorithms and “recommender systems” in ramping up combative social media exchanges in Ireland. These systems are designed to feed off emotions and polarize political views, leading to greater profits for platforms. The ICCL believes these algorithms may even play a role in influencing how people vote.
