The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning has sparked an arms race in the development and acquisition of lethal autonomous weapons systems, commonly known as killer robots. These systems differ from semi-autonomous weapons and have the potential to identify and kill targets on their own. The use of a fully autonomous drone in Libya in 2020 and the ongoing war in Ukraine have highlighted the urgency for global regulation and ethical considerations in the use of these weapons.
