State CIOs and other technology officials are preparing for a future in which AI plays a larger role in government operations. They are looking to take advantage of AI’s power while also establishing guardrails to prevent misuse. CIOs are already using generative AI in their daily work, but are cautious to draft policies for the technology. Massachusetts CIO Jason Snyder has integrated limited functionality of ChatGPT into its website chatbots and productivity suite, while Hawaii CIO Douglas Murdock warned that states should draft careful policies before AI wedges itself too deeply into their workflows.
