Stanford’s HAI (Human-centered Artificial Intelligence) report charts a sudden rise in the misuses of AI technology, from deepfakes to facial recognition, and questionable surveillance efforts. The report analyses the performance of world nations in research and development, technical performance, AI ethics, the economy, education, public and governance, diversity and public opinion. In 2022, there were nearly 32 significant machine learning models produced by industry compared to just three by academia. The report has been released at a time when tech tycoon Elon Musk, scientist Gary Marcus, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak with 1800 other notables joined hands to sign a petition seeking a moratorium on AI development.
