MEMS sensors have long been employed in various industries, but advances in technology are now equipping them with the power to process information either on-board or in their proximity. This trend is driven by the need for speedy processing and decision-making at the edge of IoT networks, and is enabled by the integration of an ASIC on the sensor. This allows for the deployment of machine learning capabilities directly on the sensor, eliminating the need to transmit data to a separate processor and reducing latency. Power efficiency is also improved, with a reduction in power consumption translating into extended battery life and more effective energy harvesting.
