OpenAI, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence, recently experienced a conflict within the organization and the broader community about the speed with which the technology should continue, and if slowing it down would make it safer. Professor of both A.I. and A.I. ethics, Maxime Mouysset, argues that the framing of the problem omits the critical question of the kind of A.I. that should be accelerated or decelerated. Mouysset has seen the same techniques used for beneficial purposes, such as translation A.I.s, being used in social media, search and recommendation engines to amplify polarization, bias and misinformation. He believes that A.I.s are manipulating humanity and will soon wield even more power to manipulate our unconscious. Mouysset argues that the “speed versus safety” debate is not the only red herring that obscures the real threats that loom before us.
