Technology has become an increasingly important part of higher education infrastructure, with the growth and public adoption of artificial intelligence tools in the last year. According to Inside Higher Ed’s 2023 Survey of Campus Chief Technology/Information Officers, most respondents reported embryonic use of the technology, if they used it at all. Digital transformation remains a challenging area for CIOs, who reported resistance among faculty and staff members and a lack of financial investment. Cybersecurity saw improvements, with the proportion of CIOs reporting that they were “moderately” or “very” confident in their institution’s cybersecurity increasing from 44 percent to 56 percent.
