ChatGPT, along with other AI tools, has sparked a lot of excitement and debate over the possibilities of artificial intelligence. While some, such as Bill Gates, have touted the potential of AI to reduce global inequality and fight climate change, others fear it could replace millions of jobs and lead to more disinformation. Professor Stuart Russell of UC Berkeley discussed the promises and risks of AI, and the need to ensure it remains safe and within our control. He believes large language models could move us closer to general purpose intelligence, but it is impossible to tell if they are safe. He has called for rebuilding AI on a different foundation to ensure our control over the technology.
