Kevin Fu, a professor at Northeastern University, has discovered a new form of cyberattack, called “Poltergeist attacks,” which manipulates the perception of self-driving cars and drones. This attack exploits optical image stabilization technology, which is common in cameras across various devices, by pinpointing the resonant frequencies of the sensors within these cameras. This interference leads to misinterpretations by the machine learning algorithms, potentially resulting in significant misjudgments by autonomous systems. This poses a serious threat to the safe operation of autonomous vehicles.
