Quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize the way the U.S. Navy operates, with possibilities such as improved processing time, optimized sensing, and impenetrable encryption methods. The Navy is actively researching and developing algorithms to harness the benefits of quantum computing, with small teams at the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWCPAC), the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport. Mike Warnock, a physicist at NUWC Division Newport, is the quantum research point person and is working on the technology while earning his doctorate degree in physics from Brown University.
