This quarterly update provides an overview of the key legislative and regulatory developments in the first quarter of 2023 related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), and data privacy and cybersecurity. At the federal level, some members of Congress have expressed concerns with the rapid uptake of AI technologies and have proposed legislation to ensure its development is done in a way that is safe, ethical, and respects the rights and privacy of all Americans. Additionally, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released its Artificial Intelligence Management Framework to provide a resource to organizations for managing the risks of AI and promoting responsible development and use of AI systems. The White House also released an Executive Order, which directs federal agencies to ensure their use of AI and automated systems advances equity.
