The AI conversation has been gaining momentum over the past five years, but the release of GPT-4 on March 14th has taken it to a new level. The launch of OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, in November 2022, and the subsequent release of GPT-4, the multimodal large language model that underpins the bot, has caused unprecedented reactions that have captured worldwide press and media attention. In response, the Future of Life Institute published an open letter calling for all AI labs to pause the training of AI systems more powerful than GT-4 for at least 6 months. This is due to the potential risks posed by AI systems with human-competitive intelligence.
