Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots like Google’s Bard or OpenAI’s ChatGPT are the product of three or four key ingredients, including engineering talent, training data, and advanced semiconductor chips. Cloud platforms are becoming the fourth essential ingredient, providing online storage and other services to AI companies. Big Tech’s power in cloud markets may give it enormous influence over the future of AI, raising concerns from policymakers and industry critics. Big Tech companies, however, argue that they compete vigorously for business and their scale helps give AI companies a comprehensive solution.
