The Internet of Things (IoT) adoption has six distinct stages of maturity: embedded devices, cloud computing, full connectivity, predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics and integrated generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Each of these stages influences business progression and operational outcomes in their own way. Embedded devices enable basic communication between devices, collecting and transmitting data. Cloud computing allows for data to be transferred from multiple devices to a single cloud platform, where it can be run through mathematical models. Full connectivity enables real-time limits to be set up, allowing for prevention of further decline. Predictive analytics helps to identify normal behavior, hierarchies, excursions and exceptions. Prescriptive analytics provides actionable insights to optimize operations. Finally, integrated generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) enables autonomous decision-making.
