The mismatch between the demand and supply of graphics processing units (GPUs) is potentially stifling artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, according to Tory Green, the COO of the decentralized GPU cloud service provider io.net. This mismatch is due to the fact that manufacturers cannot build new supplies quickly enough to match the growth in demand for machine learning (ML) training, which has grown 10x every 18 months since 2010. To limit the impact of GPU shortages, Green proposes using a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). This network would be able to tap into the collective power of a global network of nodes and scale almost infinitely.
