A team of researchers from MIT have developed a system that could lead to machine-learning programs that are more powerful and use less energy than current state-of-the-art supercomputers. The system uses the movement of light rather than electrons and has demonstrated a greater than 100-fold improvement in energy efficiency and a 25-fold improvement in compute density. The components of the system can be created using existing fabrication processes, and the team expects it to be scaled for commercial use in a few years.
