The EU has implemented comprehensive legislation to protect data privacy and enhance individual rights, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The European Data Act is the latest legislation to be finalized, which aims to boost the EU’s economy by unlocking industrial data, optimizing accessibility, and fostering a competitive and reliable European cloud market. It contains strict regulations on how data from IoT devices can be shared with third parties, and introduces minimum standards for blockchain “smart contracts”. The Act could also benefit end users of both IoT devices and cloud services, allowing them to have better access to their own user data and switch providers more easily.
