Chinese cloud computing companies are intensifying their efforts to back the development of artificial intelligence (AI) models, with Alibaba Group and Baidu Inc leading the charge. Alibaba has recently unveiled its AI large language model, Tongyi Qianwen, joining the chatbot race and positioning itself as a potential rival to ChatGPT. Cloud computing is playing an increasingly important role in Alibaba’s overall business landscape, with revenue in its cloud business reaching 20.18 billion yuan ($2.9 billion) during the October-December period. Baidu AI Cloud, the cloud computing unit of Baidu Inc, is also investing in AI-powered large language models.
