Microsoft invested US$1-billion in OpenAI in 2019 to build a massive, cutting-edge supercomputer for the artificial intelligence research start-up. This posed a challenge for Microsoft, as they had to find ways to string together tens of thousands of Nvidia’s A100 graphics chips and change how they positioned their cloud computing services to meet OpenAI’s needs. To do this, they created a new type of cloud computing service called Azure Supercomputing, which allowed them to provide OpenAI with the resources they needed.
