The Tragedy of the Commons is a concept coined by British economist William Forster Lloyd in 1833 to describe a situation in which individuals have open access to a collective resource, but act according to their own self-interest, leading to the depletion of the resource. This concept is applicable to today’s cloud-first data operations (dataops) environment, where the public cloud is a shared resource that appears to be free to data teams, but can become unsustainable if used without consideration of cost or consequence.
