Yasha Levine’s book, Surveillance Valley, discusses the counterinsurgency and surveillance underbelly of the internet. The internet was originally developed as a Pentagon project called ARPANET, which was a counterinsurgency, communications, and surveillance project. ARPA was formed in response to the shock of being “beaten” by the USSR in space after the launch of the Sputnik satellite. ARPA was later renamed DARPA and is now responsible for Operation Warp Speed.
