The Moravec Paradox, formulated by engineer Hans Moravec more than four decades ago, states that it is easy for computers to show abilities similar to those of an adult human in intelligence tests, yet difficult for them to have the perception and motor skills of a 1-year-old child. This paradox is still relevant today, and is being challenged by the new vigor of artificial intelligence. The key to understanding this duality of computers is to distinguish the difference between the tasks they intend to perform, and to understand the contrasts between robotics and AI.
