MIT researchers have developed an AI technique called smoothing to enable robots to quickly identify an effective manipulation plan for contact-rich tasks. Smoothing summarizes many contact events into a smaller number of decisions, allowing even a simple algorithm to plan for the task. This technique could potentially enable factories to use smaller, mobile robots and reduce energy consumption and costs. It could also be useful in robots sent on exploration missions to other solar system bodies, as they could adapt to the environment quickly using only an onboard computer.
