In 1955, John McCarthy proposed the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which would enable machines to simulate human intelligence. Since then, advances in computer science and robotics have enabled us to automate many tasks that previously required human labor. However, true AI, as McCarthy conceived it, continues to elude us. AI is a broad term and there is no clear agreement on its definition. Andrew Moore, Dean of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, provided a more modern definition of the term in a 2017 interview with Forbes. Zachary Lipton, the editor of Approximately Correct, describes the current state of AI as a “messy, interdisciplinary field”.
