Robots are increasingly being used to perform Hindu religious rituals, such as the ‘aarti’ ritual in which a devotee offers an oil lamp to the deity. This has sparked debate among devotees and priests, with some feeling that it represents a new horizon in human innovation, while others worry that it could replace practitioners. Technology firms in India have developed robotic arms to perform the ritual, and these have been unveiled at the Ganpati festival in Pune. Other religious robots have also been developed to perform various other rituals.
