In 2023, Artificial Intelligence (AI) went mainstream with the release of ChatGPT, a chatbot that gave the world a glimpse of recent advances in computer science. This year was a time for people to figure out the implications of the technology, both good and bad. The first AI panic of the year occurred when schools started blocking ChatGPT due to students using it to complete take-home tests. AI large language models behind technology such as ChatGPT work by repeatedly guessing the next word in a sentence after having “learned” the patterns of a huge trove of human-written works. This sparked curiosity and worries about the potential use for trickery and deception, as well as the threat to the livelihoods of anyone who writes, draws, strums or codes for a living.
