Curiosity Robotics has recently launched Aico, a friendly robot that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help children learn English as a second language. Aico is programmed to teach English using dynamic activities such as songs, games, and flashcards, and is controlled by a teacher through a mobile app. Aico is designed to recreate the natural experience by which young children instinctively acquire language skills. During a trial run at two kindergartens in Tel Aviv, Aico was successful with children and is used for short, daily interactive lessons. The main objectives of Aico are to assist caregivers or parents in teaching English to 1-5 year-olds, or to become a playful, personalized, and curiosity-based teacher to a toddler. Researchers recognize that the use of AI in ESL teaching is inevitable.
