A group of researchers presented a best paper award at the Tackling Climate Change with Machine Learning Workshop at ICLR for their work on using machine learning to forecast weather. The winning paper, “Scaling transformer neural networks for skillful and reliable medium-range weather forecasting,” explores the use of modern AI tools for forecasting compared to classical methods. The research team includes Romit Maulik, an assistant professor at Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences.
