IBM and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) are partnering to develop a 10,000-qubit quantum system, which is 75 times more powerful than current quantum computers. This unprecedented super quantum machine is expected to be ready by 2029 and will significantly advance quantum computing development. Japan’s strong IT manufacturing capabilities and component manufacturers will be involved in the project, and Japanese companies will have privileged access to the new quantum systems. IBM has a defined roadmap for quantum computing development, with a 2,000-qubit commercial system expected by 2033.
