The Japanese Ophthalmological Society and the National Institute of Informatics have developed an AI model to estimate an individual’s sex from fundus images, using data collected by the Japan Ocular Imaging Registry. This breakthrough in deep learning has potential to aid in understanding the pathophysiology of diseases and has surpassed human accuracy in image recognition. Researchers across Japan are collaborating to develop medical assistance AIs using NII’s cloud platform and JOIR’s database of ophthalmic images.
