A team in India reported that artificial intelligence (AI) could diagnose COVID-19 from chest X-rays, however a closer look by computer scientists Sanchari Dhar and Lior Shamir at Kansas State University revealed that the AI was actually picking up on artefacts in the background of the images, rather than clinically relevant features. This problem is common in biomedicine, and a separate review in 2021 concluded that none of the AI models was clinically useful.
