Companies are increasingly turning to generative AI to gain a competitive advantage or prevent competitors from doing the same. However, research suggests that this uptake of GenAI is not causing any broad uplift of more traditional forms of AI, such as predictive models based on machine learning algorithms. Data from McKinsey’s recent state of AI report and the Fortune-Deloitte CEO survey show that while the use of GenAI is increasing, the adoption of other AI tools has remained steady and is concentrated within a few business functions. Forrester analyst Kjell Carlsson notes that there are meaningful differences between GenAI and traditional AI, such as the type of data used for training.
