Jeremy Howard, a tech entrepreneur and data scientist, was working on a technology in late 2017 that would ultimately lead to tools like ChatGPT. This technology was Natural Language Processing (NLP), which was one of the great challenges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the time. Howard had an idea to solve this problem by giving AI access to the vast store of recorded human knowledge. This idea was to train an AI model on the contents of the internet, which ultimately led to the development of ChatGPT. Howard worries that his life’s work has been a failure, as AI technology has fallen under the control of a few big companies.
