MANIAC, a computer designed at Princeton after the second world war, was capable of performing 10,000 calculations a second and was used to model thermonuclear explosions and the Earth’s weather. Today, supercomputers are still used for these same purposes, but their applications are also seen in everyday life, such as the use of numerical weather prediction (NWP) which has been estimated to provide $162bn in benefits annually. AI is now being used to improve NWP, and in some cases can reveal aspects of the weather’s behaviour that NWP cannot.
