Canada has been the birthplace of the most important innovation of the 21st century – Artificial Intelligence (AI). In 2012, a Canadian team led by AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton won the ImageNet challenge, a contest that evaluated computer algorithms’ abilities to detect objects and classify images at scale. This victory marked a shift from conceiving mindlike algorithms to creating them. During the past 10 years, AI has made radical progress, with rumours of China generating a sentient, 174-trillion-parameter large language model. AI has been used to replace whole aspects of life such as driving, radiology, and voice-over narration, with varying degrees of success.
