This article examines two questions related to type 2 diabetes subclassification. The first question examines simple stratification approaches using clinical variables, while the second question aims to identify papers with complex approaches, mostly ML-based strategies. A total of 6097 studies were screened for the first question, of which 183 were included for full text data review, and 51 studies underwent full-text data extraction. For the second question, 6639 studies were screened, of which 106 were found eligible for full-text review, and 62 studies underwent full-text data extraction. The majority of the studies (78%, 40/51) were conducted in populations with prevalent type 2 diabetes, and 22% (11/51) in new-onset type 2 diabetes.
