A Nature survey of more than 1,600 researchers around the world suggests that Artificial-intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly common in science and are expected to become ‘very important’ or ‘essential’ in the next decade. An analysis of research papers shows that the share of papers mentioning AI terms has risen in every field over the past decade. Machine-learning statistical techniques are now well established, and generative AI tools, such as large language models, are being used to help summarize and write research papers, brainstorm ideas and write code, and suggest medical diagnoses. The survey revealed that AI tools provide faster ways to process data, speed up computations that were not previously feasible, and save scientists time and money.
