100x Efficiency: Mit’s Machine-learning System Based On Light Could Yield More Powerful Large Language Models

MIT researchers have developed a system that could lead to machine-learning programs several orders of magnitude more powerful than the one behind ChatGPT. The system demonstrates greater than 100-fold improvement in energy efficiency and a 25-fold improvement in compute density compared with current systems. The system is based on light and could jumpstart the power of machine-learning programs. The research was published in the prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature Photonics.
