A team of scientists at MIT have developed a new system that uses light instead of electricity to do calculations, making it over 100 times more energy-efficient and 25 times more powerful than traditional computers. The system is made up of lasers, which are tiny lights, and the parts used for it can already be made using existing processes. The team believes that this technology could be ready for commercial use in a few years, and could lead to more powerful machine-learning models than what we have today.
