Apple is reportedly working on its own generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) artificial intelligence (AI) model, codenamed “Ajax”, which is similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. However, there is no indication that the company has any plans to launch it to the public. Apple is known for its privacy-focused AI technology, and is likely focusing on AI technologies that can be run using onboard processors instead of cloud-based services. If Apple were to develop a GPT model capable of running discretely on iPhone hardware, it could be a boon to users who value privacy over the conversational features embedded in the larger cloud-based models.
