Google was once a leader in the AI space, but now it seems to be playing second fiddle to OpenAI. This is due to the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which prompted Google to rush the release of their own conversational agent, Bard. Google’s AI efforts began even before the founding of OpenAI, with the first big announcement coming in the form of Google Now in 2012. Google Now used machine learning to recommend news articles based on their search history, which then evolved to the Google Assistant. This slowly transitioned to a company-wide strategy, with CEO Sundar Pichai stating that AI will be at the core of all of Google’s products.
