UNSW and Boston University researchers have developed an AI tool that may be able to predict the onset of non-genetic Parkinson’s disease years before the first symptoms start appearing. The tool works by analysing biomarkers in patients’ bodily fluids, using neural networks to compare metabolites of 39 patients who developed Parkinson’s to 39 matched control patients. The researchers developed a machine learning tool called CRANK-MS to identify unique combinations of metabolites that could be early-warning signs for Parkinson’s.
