A group of technologists have called for a halt to the development of OpenAI Lab’s GPT-4 algorithm, citing potential risks to society and humanity. GPT-4 is a Generative Pre-trained Transformer that is expected to become an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) when it advances to GPT-5. The trend of AI training models has been increasing in size by 2.5 times per year, and GPT-4 is currently the largest system in terms of training compute. Anthony Aguirre, a professor of physics at UC Santa Cruz, believes that GPT-4 will continue to more than double in computational capabilities every year.
