Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are now a part of everyday life, impacting almost every aspect of modern life. Georgetown professor Will Fleisher specializes in the ethics of AI and ML and has noted their impacts on various spaces, such as who you date, where you work, and even the shape of democratic discourse. AI is a computer system that can perform tasks in an intelligent way, while ML is a subset of AI that allows a computer to learn independently of human input. At Georgetown, many scientists are studying how AI learns and applying it to solve complex problems. Nicolas Bocock (CAS ’23) is a student researcher working with physics professor David Egolf, utilizing neural networks to teach them to recognize handwritten numbers.
