AI technologies are raising ethical questions with pressing social importance, with recent cases such as Italy banning ChatGPT over privacy concerns, an Australian whistle-blower threatening to sue for defamation after the chatbot falsely described him as a perpetrator, and a Belgian man dying by suicide after confiding in an AI chatbot. AI experts have identified that many of these problems stem from the probabilistic nature of AI systems and their unpredictable outputs. An example of this is Amazon’s hiring algorithm, which was trained on the CVs of current and previous employees who were overwhelmingly male, resulting in a bias against women. Humans also rely on the past to make decisions, but this can be addressed by creating ethical frameworks and regulations to ensure AI is used responsibly.
