Recent years have seen an increased use of digital technology in clinical trials, including the adoption of mobile technologies, the use of social media platforms, electronic documentation and communication tools, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) data analysis, blockchains and cloud technology. These technologies are being used to streamline processes, including the use of state-of-the-art mobile technologies and electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs). Digital tools are also being more widely used for patient communication, monitoring and documentation, including ePROs, electronic health records, electronic case report forms, electronic life records and remote patient monitoring.
