A multidisciplinary team of scientists led by Kim Warren-Rhodes of the SETI Institute have developed a machine-learning tool to help scientists search for signs of life on Mars and other alien worlds. The tool was trained to recognize the signatures of life in data collected from the Salar de Pajonales, a salt flat on the boundary of the Chilean Atacama Desert and Altiplano. The model was able to accurately identify the presence of life in the samples, and the team believes it could be used to help guide future searches for extraterrestrial life.
