Researchers at Princess Alexandra Hospital are developing an AI tool to improve the safe use of intravenous heparin. The AI tool uses machine learning and data from electronic medical records to predict the therapeutic effect of a given dose of the drug. This prevents underdosing or overdosing, which can have serious consequences. The development of the AI tool has been made possible due to Queensland Health’s significant investment in implementing electronic medical records into 16 public hospitals over the last seven years.
