This chapter examines which world order is better suited for driving and maintaining innovation. By taking historical factors that have shaped past waves of innovation and reviewing them alongside data from the Atlantic Council’s Freedom and Prosperity Indexes, it is found that the liberal order seems better positioned to foster technological innovation. However, there are ways in which authoritarian regimes can elbow their way into innovation.
